It’s ALL NEW at the Kitchen Theatre with PRIVATE LIVES by Noël Coward opening its 20th Anniversary Season in a brand new building

Ithaca, NY: The Kitchen Theatre Company, Ithaca’s year-round, downtown professional theater company, is beginning its 20th Anniversary Season on September 1st in a brand new space. PRIVATE LIVES runs from September 1st to 19th at the Kitchen Theatre’s newly renovated building at 417 W. State / W. Martin Luther King, Jr. Street.

Renovations to the new building include a bright, attractive lobby with space for art installations, comfortable new theater seating, well-appointed audience amenities, and a quieter and more efficient heating and cooling system. The audience capacity has increased from 73 seats to 99 seats. Patrons are not the only ones to benefit from the Kitchen's move. Artists will enjoy larger dressing rooms and agreen room lounge.

Private Lives by Noël Coward is a sophisticated comedy of relationships as appealing today as it was when the play opened 80 years ago. From the delectable first moments of the play, when the audience meets the unlikely honeymooners and their former spouses, it is clear that sparks will fly. Like a bubbling champagne, Private Lives delights in its effervescence and charms in its language.

“I can’t think of a better way to start this exciting season than with this production,” says Kitchen Theatre Artistic Director Rachel Lampert. “Private Lives is an enduring classic comedy we could never have produced at our old location. The script calls for a major scene change between the two acts, which would have required a 45-minute intermission to accomplish in the Clinton House! And I am thrilled to have Kitchen Theatre Company veterans Margarett Perry directing, Brian Dykstra in the role of Elyot Chase, and Camilla Schade (in a cameo scene stealing role) as collaborating artists in the first production in our new space.”

BED & SOFA by Polly Pen and Laurence Klavin – January 19 - February 6, 2011
This chamber musical based on a 1928 Russian silent film tells of a couple living in Moscow and how their lives are affected when they take in a boarder. Who sleeps in the bed and who sleeps on the sofa? A story of love and feminism that was way ahead of its time. The KTC production will star long-time favorite Erica Steinhagen and Susannah Berryman will direct.

boom by Peter Sinn Nachtrieb – February 23 - March 13, 2011
An explosive new comedy about the end of the world. Jules is a graduate student studying fish behavior who is quite convinced that the fish are predicting a meteor hit that will change life as we know it. Jo is an undergraduate English major who answered an ad. Are they the new Adam and Eve? Sam Buggeln, director of this season’s hit SPEECH & DEBATE, will direct.

THE TRICKY PART by Marty Moran – March 23 - April 10, 2011
A memoir about spirituality, sexuality, and ultimately forgiveness. Playwright Marty Moran looks back from the vantage point of maturity and self-knowledge on a relationship he had as a teenager with an older man. Told with wit and humanity, The Tricky Part is both a cautionary tale and an inspiring story of the ability to transform and forgive.

S/HE (a new work) – May 4 - 15, 2011
Two playwrights from opposite sides of the globe, American Tammy Ryan and Turkish playwright Zeynep Kaçar, share in the creation of an evening of theater exploring the female body as battleground. Woven together under the direction of Melanie Dreyer, S/HE looks at the life of a typical American teenage girl juxtaposed against true stories of women from contemporary Turkey. Produced in collaboration with International Culture Lab and Cornell University.

MARY'S WEDDING by Stephen Massicotte – June 8 - 19, 2011
In 1914, a young Canadian soldier meets a young woman just as he is about to go overseas. It is a familiar story told in a most unusual way–a dreamscape of passionate love, heart-wrenching separation, hope and survival. For those who loved Last Train to Nibroc, this will be another favorite.

AT A LOSS (a new play) by Jason Odell Williams – July 13 - 31, 2011
Israeli grandmother Edna has insisted that her granddaughter Ayelet join her on a trip to the U.S.; Edna is on a mission. Michelle Hurst is a NYC based actress. Michelle originated the role of Daphney Oldham. She has numerous stage and television credits.

Sean Eversley Bradwell, PhD is an assistant professor in the Center for the Study of Culture, Race and Ethnicity at Ithaca College. He serves as the coordinator for the African Diaspora Studies minor.

Carol Kammen is a historian and senior lecturer in History at Cornell University, and the author of several books. She is the editor of The Pursuit of Local History and co-editor of The Encyclopedia of Local History.

Ithaca College Theatre Announces Its 2010-2011 Season

Subscriptions to the 2010–2011 Ithaca College Theatre season include tickets to five productions and are available for as little as $25. Electra, Euripides’ classic dramatic tragedy of murder and revenge launches Ithaca College Theatre’s 2010-2011 season.

Winner of six Tony Awards, including “Best Musical,” City of Angels, tells the story of the writer, Stine, as well as the story of the movie he’s writing. But when Stine’s story gets entangled with that of his protagonist, Stone, the edges around the real world and the “reel” world, blur. City of Angels is written by Larry Gelbert with music by Cy Coleman (Sweet Charity) and lyrics by David Zippel.

The next play is Paula Vogel’s 1998 winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama How I Learned to Drive. This boundary-pushing drama gives voice to Li’l Bit, a girl who is forced to grow up too soon when her Uncle Peck simultaneously teaches her “the rules of the road” and the “laws of love”. How I Learned to Drive is not included in subscription packages.

The annual collaboration between the Department of Theatre Arts and the School of Music will be a production of Claudio Monteverdi’s Italian opera, L’Orfeo. L’Orfeo retells the classic mythological story of the newlywed Orfeo and his heroic venture down into the underworld, as he risks his life in the hope of rescuing his dead wife, Euridice.

Adapted from Jamila Gavin’s award-winning children’s novel, Helen Edmondson’s Coram Boy, is a historical drama set in England between 1742 and 1750. Coram Boy addresses the charitable work of Thomas Coram, founder of the Foundling Hospital to house and educate the “unwanted children” of the time. Coram Boy tells the interlaced stories of six children and their attempts to pursue their passions, discover love, and find a home.

The spring musical, Baby, composed by David Shire, with lyrics by Richard Maltby, Jr. (Miss Saigon), tells the story of three separate couples who suddenly find themselves “expecting.”

SPECIAL CHILI COOK-OFF FUNDRAISER - PURCHASE CORNBREAD AT THE EVENT!

We are happy to announce a Chili Cook-off fundraiser for the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Snack Program at Beverly J. Martin Elementary School (BJM).

The program is administered through the New York Coalition for Healthy School Food and is run locally with assistance from the Village at Ithaca.

The program utilizes local farmers and suppliers to provide healthy snacks of fresh fruits and vegetables to the students at BJM. It is the goal of the program to eventually offer the program throughout the ICSD.

The program has been successful in not only getting children to try a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables but in actually changing the preference of the children to their 'snack of choice'. Children have been quoted as saying they "feel smarter" and "more focused" as a result of having these foods as an alternative. Parents have also shared that students have brought these practices home. It has also been a wonderful supplement to those children whose parents cannot afford to send their children to school with a daily snack.

5 Must-See Places in Ithaca

It has made history in more ways than one; besides being home to the famed Cornell University which was one of the first coeducational institutions in the country, Ithaca has also been in the news for its local currency, the Ithaca Hour which is the oldest and largest local currency in the USA that is still in operation. This beautiful part of the state of New York is a traveler’s paradise and a local’s dream. So if you just find yourself in Ithaca in the course of your travels, here are five must-see places in this lovely corner of America:

• Moosewood Restaurant: Ithaca bodes well for the traveler who values health. Probably the only place where a McDonald’s was forced to close down, this town has redefined vegetarianism and made it a way of life. And if you’re looking for a good place to taste the flavor of Ithaca, the Moosewood Restaurant is just where you should go – not only has it been around for more than a century, it was also named one of the thirteen most influential restaurants of the 20th century by the Bon Appetit magazine.

• Namgyal Monastery: The primary role of this monastery when it was founded in 1575 in Tibet was to assist with rituals involving the Dalai Lama. It was relocated to Dharamsala in India after 1959 when the Dalai Lama took up asylum there. In 1992 however, an American branch was established at Ithaca on the advice of the present Dalai Lama. The Namgyal Monastery Institute of Buddhist Studies offers course in the Tibetan language, Buddhist philosophy and meditation practice. The activities here are similar to those at other dharma centers – retreats, pujas and dharma talks await those who seek inner peace.

• The Farmer’s Market: If you’re an organic foodie, you’re going to go nuts over this place – you have fresh fruits, vegetables, honey, jam, nuts and other wholly organic foods that are just waiting to be sampled and bought. Besides this, you can also come ready to eat fresh, home-cooked food, and also pick up a few souvenirs that make great memorabilia at home and gifts for friends.

• The Wine Trail: There are many of them, so arm yourself with enough information before you make your choice. They’re all around the Finger Lakes region, so you either can take your time and explore most of them or do enough for just one day. If you want to get done with your tour of wineries in one day and move on to the other sights, the Cayuga Wine trail is your best bet. But if you have more time on your hands, the Senaca Lake train and the Keuka Lake trail are both worth your while too.

• The State Parks: There are many of them, including Taughannock, Tremen, Buttermilk Falls, Filmore Glen and Watkins Glen. All of them have hiking or biking trails, waterfalls, and areas that are suitable for swimming and picnicking. A word of warning however - please follow local rules when you’re interacting with nature to avoid accidents. Ithaca is beautiful country, but if you’re foolhardy and careless, you could get yourself seriously injured or even killed.

An Urban Lichen Walk

Led by David Werier, botanical consultant and steering committee member of the Finger Lakes Native Plant Society, this walk will focus on developing the skills necessary to appreciate these often overlooked, but stunning creatures. There will be a short session indoors in the BorgWarner Community Room followed by a walk around the city.

Sure she appeared as part of last year's incredible Three Girls and their Buddy show with Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin and Buddy Miller, but since then Ithaca has constantly asked for each act to return on their own merits and this is our first opportunity to oblige - after all - on that show each act only got to pick a song every fourth time around the circle... Shawn Colvin is one of the leading lights of the so-called "new folk movement" that began in the late '80s. Although she grew out of the somewhat limited "woman with a guitar" school, she kept the form fresh with a diverse approach, avoiding the genre's clichéd sentiments and all-too-often formulaic arrangements in favor of a more personal, pop-influenced style. Colvin's debut record won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album in 1991, but it was her 1997 single, "Sunny Came Home," that firmly catapulted her into the mainstream. Although she never revisited that commercial peak again, Colvin still commanded a broad, loyal following into the subsequent decades. About the play:

About the play: It's 1938, in the dead of winter. A ramshackle Gilbert & Sullivan touring coming, the Carter Family Savoyards, are playing every possible theater to make ends meet. Only able to employ four singers, they do an evening of selections from the operettas of Gilbert & Sullivan called PRECIOUS NONSENSE. When their truck pulls up to the Blue Barn Theatrical Palace they unload and expect to do their well-worn evening of songs. But the theater manager has been advertising a full production of the Pirates of Penzance and refuses to pay them if they do anything less. It's backstage mayhem, on-stage outrageousness and just plain fun--just what is needed on a cold Ithaca winter day or night.

The play offers a wonderful cast: local favorites Erica Steinhagen, Jesse Bush, Perri LoPinto, and Jessica Carr, NYC-based actors Joel Robertson and Jake Paque, and IC student Kurt Merrill, with music direction by Richard Montgomery.

Downtown Ithaca Light in Winter Gallery Night

A third installment of historic local paintings presented by the History Center, digital photography of the heavens and an artist's exhibit that begs the question "What makes a marriage?"; are a few of the exciting gallery night entrants scheduled for the Downtown Ithaca Light in Winter Gallery Night from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, January 22, 2010.

January 22nd will mark month three of Historic Paintings Unwrapped, at the History Center (401 E. State St.), featuring the watercolors of W. Glenn Norris, a native Ithacan who translated his love for local history into many well-known paintings. A more contemporary artistic view of the local landscape will be on display at the CAP Artspace (Center Ithaca, 171 E. State St.) where artist Dan McPheeters displays his newest exhibit; "Landscape / Skyscape / Dreamscape." Over the past year Dan has been working on a new series of pieces that represent his lifelong interest in science, nature, and art and how these interconnect.

Exploring the interconnection between art and social change, the State of the Art Gallery (120 W. State St.) will host artist Eva Capobianco and her exhibit; "What makes a marriage?" In this exhibit Ms. Capobianco uses her art to compare today's struggle for gay marriage equality with the fight for legal interracial marriage. Incorporating quotes and ideas from these parallel debates into her sculptures in ways that she hopes will foster a healthy discussion about them. In addition to these exhibits The Ink Shop (330 E. MLK/State St.) will host two exhibits; Natural History: Critical Condition and Results through Ink Shop Instruction. The Tompkins County Public Library (101 E. Green St.) will likewise feature dual exhibits; Living Light: A Celebration of the Finger Lakes Native Flora and The Art behind the Scientist featuring sculpture by Frank Moon. Other gallery night participants include the on-going Annual Open Show at the Community School of Music and Arts (330 E. State St.), a sculpture exhibit at Sola Gallery (215 N. Cayuga St.) photography at Shangri-La Gifts (171 E. State St.) and funky collages by Railey Jane Savage at Collegetown Bagels (203 N. Aurora St.).

Gallery Night is free and open to the public. All of the participating galleries are within a short walking distance of one another, and maps with information about the exhibits taking place at each gallery will be available that evening along the Ithaca Commons. A CSMA tradition, the exhibit includes eclectic, energetic work by over 30 established and emerging regional artists in a variety of media. The exhibit runs through January 29, 2009.

2010 Compendium Presents a Wide Variety of Cornell Hospitality Research Articles

Ithaca, NY, January 4, 2010 – The Cornell Center for Hospitality Research (CHR) has issued its 2010 Cornell Hospitality Compendium. Like all of the CHR's publications, the 2010 compendium can be downloaded at no charge from the CHR website at http//www.hotelschool.cornell.edu/research/chr/pubs/reports/2010.html. The compendium presents summaries of all 2009 CHR publications in one convenient package. This includes Cornell Hospitality Reports, Cornell Hospitality Tools, and Cornell Hospitality Roundtable Proceedings. In addition, the compendium compiles summaries from the Cornell Hospitality Quarterly for articles published in 2009 by the faculty of the Cornell School of Hotel Administration.

"The compendium presents a graphic record of the groundbreaking work done by the CHR Research Fellows," said Professor Rohit Verma, CHR executive director. "But it also is a useful document for managers in the hospitality industry and related industries, because it contains so much potentially valuable information." The compendium's summaries are linked to the original research reports and tools, to allow CHR web users to download any report of interest, again at no charge. Cornell Hospitality Quarterly articles are available at a reasonable charge, by arrangement with Sage Publishing (http://cqx.sagepub.com/).

Reports and tools presented in the 2010 compendium cover a wide variety of topic areas, including new categories for innovation and spas. It's 1938, and a ramshackle touring company, the Carter Family Savoyards, pulls into an upstate New York town for an engagement at the Blue Barn Theatrical Palace. A troupe of four singers who perform an evening of songs by Gilbert and Sullivan, they are shocked to discover that the management at the Blue Barn has advertised a full production of the Pirates of Penzance. But in the spirit of "the show must go on" - they do!

It's backstage and on-stage mayhem in this madcap musical packed with quick changes, mistaken identities and filled to the brim with Gilbert and Sullivan favorites.

PMI Announces Dates for First 2010 Short Course

(openPR) - Porous Materials, Inc. (PMI) is happy to announce the dates for it's first Short Course for the new year. The course, titled "Pore Structure Characterization; Theory & Practice", will be held during the week of May 11-13, 2010.

The PMI Short Course brings together our experts in pore structure and characterization, as well as technical specialists from industries, research laboratories and universities, for three days of intensive lectures, discussions, and hands-on practice. The material presented addresses the theory and application of methods for determining pore structure and distribution in a wide variety of materials.

Attendees learn the basics and catch up on the latest advances in porosity characterization techniques. Our Short Course schedule will include plenty of time for one-on-one discussions with PMI's technical staff. Each day of the course is filled with fun and education, as on Monday and Friday, we offer tours of Ithaca attractions to the course attendees, taking them to local waterfalls & wineries, and offering a walking tour of Cornell University campus. We end each day with dinner at one of our fine local restaurants, which offer a variety of cuisines for everyone.

Martin Luther King Day(s) in Ithaca, New York 14850

On Saturday 16 January, the Greater Ithaca Activities Center (GIAC) hosts its annual Martin Luther King Day breakfast, from 9 - 10:30.

Derrick McQueen of Union Theological Seminary in New York City will speak on eradicating poverty. Community members will entertain with poetry and song.

The breakfast is $3 for adults, $2 for seniors and students, $10 for families of 4 and more.

On Monday 18 January, GIAC and other organizations from downtown and the colleges host free workshops and a lunch at the Womens Community Building. Workshops are from 9 - 11 and lunch is from 11:30 to 1:45.

Heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases are the No. 1 killer of American women, claiming the lives of more than 450,000 American women each year- a problem far too serious to ignore as the Senate debates the ways in which the health care system can best serve patients.

The amendment would add key provisions from the bipartisan-supported HEART for Women Act to the Senate health care reform legislation to help eliminate disparities in the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease and stroke in women. This includes:

Expanding the CDC's WISEWOMAN heart disease and stroke screening and lifestyle modification program to low-income women in all 50 states.

A Free Concert and Celebration of Thai World Music at
Ithaca's State Theater

Taste of Thai Express, The Foreign Ministry of Thailand and Singha Beer present Himmapan: 2nd World, at the State Theater in Ithaca on Saturday, September 12, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. The show is free and open to the public. It features a troupe of 12 to 16 Thai performers that dance, sing, and play music. The performance also uses original video and acoustic storytelling. Its message is that the peaceful co-existence found among the animals in the mythical forest of Himmapan is an example for our world's myriad of personalities and our need to find such harmony.

The Ithaca SufferJets are sponsoring a juried art show to benefit roller derby in Ithaca and Ithaca Foodnet Meals on Wheels. The show, titled MOVEMENT, will open on September 4^th 2009 from 5-8 pm, in conjunction with First Friday Gallery night.

The works in the show all embody the theme of movement and are of various media including digital video, photography, sculpture, and mixed.

Guests at the opening will enjoy libations generously donated by Damiani Winery and tasty nibbles provided by Simply Red Bistro. The evening will feature a reading by Ithaca poet Lyrae van Clief-Stefanon. In addition Dr. Sally Roesch Wagner will present "The Movement of Ideas: How Matilda Jocelyn Gage learned from the Haudenosaunee," followed by a book signing.

The show is located at Petrune Gallery, upstairs from Petrune at 126 East State Street. The show will run from September 4^th until October 10^th. Sales of the art will benefit the Ithaca SufferJets and Ithaca Foodnet Meals on Wheels.

A Free Concert and Celebration of Thai World Music at
Ithaca's State Theater
Taste of Thai Express, The Foreign Ministry of Thailand and Singha Beer present Himmapan: 2nd World, at the State Theater in Ithaca on Saturday, September 12, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. The show is free and open to the public. It features a troupe of 12 to 16 Thai performers that dance, sing, and play music. The performance also uses original video and acoustic storytelling. Its message is that the peaceful co-existence found among the animals in the mythical forest of Himmapan is an example for our world's myriad of personalities and our need to find such harmony.

Archie #600 features Archie marrying Veronica in a storyline that looks at the gang after they graduate college. It's written by Michael Uslan (producer of many superhero movies) and drawn by Stan Goldberg, who's been drawing Archie for almost 40 years.

Reportedly, this is only part 1 of a six-part storyline that will also show, in future issues, what would happen if Archie married Betty. Archie #600 is due out now.

This sounds like an imaginary, "what if", possible future story, not any kind of new direction, although I'm not sure that's been clear in the promotion. It may be to the publisher's advantage that it isn't, since the idea of Archie finally making a choice is getting the comic plenty of media attention. Plus, there's good room for argument among those who disagree with his choice of Veronica and would prefer Betty.

Only $2.50 an issue, the series will span six parts up to #606.

10,000 VILLAGES

An event is being hosted by Ten Thousand Villages in Ithaca (August 28-30^th at Saint Catherine of Siena), that embodies a story of hope and shares one Pakistani man's vision of helping village Oriental rug artisans receive economic parity within Pakistan.

This Pakistani Baptist minister decided to make the world a better place by forming a job creation program which pays a living wage to Pakistani artisans (men and women equally) who make heirloom quality rugs. Starting with ten families in the 1960's, this program has grown to over 850 families presently receiving fair wages for their work.

Their work can be seen at the Oriental Rug Event August 28-30 that is hosted by Ten Thousand Villages, Ithaca. This event will be held at St. Catherine of Siena Church 302 St. Catherine Circle, Ithaca.

The long awaited absence of a downtown drug store is about to change. Palmer Drug Store, based in Trumansburg and Ovid, has signed a lease with Cayuga Place to open a 3,500 SF full service drug store. The location is on Green Street next to Urban Outfitters. The drug store will also feature an ice cream fountain area serving Cayuga Creamery ice cream. An October 1 opening is planned.

Guest Trumpeter Charlie Bertini Headlines Benefit Concert @ CSMA on Aug 15th:

Renowned trumpet player Charlie Bertini will be the featured guest artist with the Ageless Jazz Band in a special dance and concert to benefit CSMA on Saturday, August 15 at 8 pm. Advance tickets are $15 and available through the Ticket Center Ithaca (in Center Ithaca; 607.273.4497) and at CSMA. Tickets are also available at the door for $17.

Bertini will also offer a master class (just $5) from 4:00-5:30PM at CSMA, open to any and all musicians, regardless of age, instrument, skill level or area of study.

Bertini, a native of Cortland, NY, is the founder and Executive Director of the annual AppleJazz Festival in upstate NY which celebrated its 25th anniversary in May. Artists he has worked with include Burt Bacharach, Henry Mancini, Johnny Mathis, Ray Charles, Al Martino, Mel Torme, and Patti Page. His performances have taken him to 45 states, Europe, and China.

The tour is a leisurely guided walk spanning approximately 45 minutes, where you will hear about the rich and fascinating history of our fair city, with tales touching upon many important events in local history such as the Iroquois Settlement along Cayuga Lake, Cornell University and Ithaca College history, silent movie stars, as well as stories from the 'bad old days' of fun and excitement in the city's West End in the days of the Erie Canal and later. Frankie Manning passed away today April29, 2009

Dear Friend and Supporter,Today we have lost yet another. Frankie Manning, dance innovator and honorary leader of the present-day lindy hop community, passed away this morning. In addition to his many contributions to the art of lindy hop, Frankie was part of the Tony Award winning dream team of choreographers on the Broadway production of "Black and Blue" which also included Cholly Atkins, Henry LeTang, and Fayard Nicholas.

Born with looping device in-hand, Torn has been creating electronic music for well over fifteen years. But you won't find him checking his email on-stage! Along with his laptop, he plays electric bass and guitar, which are used as the centerpieces for creating fresh textures & sounds. No sound is safe from Torn. From cassette tapes to field recordings, Torn uses them all to create his signature playful sound which has been heard on KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic and WNYC’s New Sounds. His second album “You are Lucky I am Not a Vigilante” is currently out on iTunes. He has also remixed tracks for the acclaimed experimental jazz/rock trio Hans Blix in addition to winning composer awards through his work with recording studio, MassiveMusic. This guy is an absolute genius and is coming to Ithaca for one night only!

Opening the night will be local electronics genius David Ezra Brown. Some of you may know Brown as one-half of the local hip-hop/ electronics group, D.A.M.A.G.E. Still equipped with the same cool gear: Ableton Live (laptop), drum pads, synths, and other hardware, Brown's new solo project meanders in a more jazzy, downtempo direction, focusing on the lusciousness of each beat. Dave's got a ton of fresh new material - so come early!

Rounding out the night will be Ithaca's inimitable queen of deep beatZ, DJ Laika. Known for instigating audience head-nods and body grooves while checking her email, Laika's dj sets combine lush, sexy sounds with a good dose of futurism. She's definitely a big fan of the Berlin-style minimal techno sound but one can expect to hear multiple electronic genres and music that draws heavily from acoustic elements in jazz and hip-hop. Accompanying Laika will be visuals by local awesome VJ, Philosophia.

How can your experience as a student leader in student organization can be transfered into a more reality off - campus organization, or club?

The answer is simple. Here in tompkins county any one who is a resistance of Ithaca - Tompkins county can purchase a D.B.A. Cost = $ 25.00.

None the less, you should take a look at the following:

One: What is your focus? This means you will have to compose a simple statement of what is your organizations scope and purpose.

Two: Find a local sponsor who is willing to act as an advisory compacity. At present I will be promoting this with the Ithaca Downtown Partnership as part of its marketing plan.

Three: Leadership of the organization, term limits, and additional transitition in which the present leadership has found they want to stay in Ithaca and from which they are encourage to develop private businesses. It is this last point in which the entire Students / Scholars Clubs OnLine Network was envisioned for, and nothing else.

BIG AND LITTLE RED DAY -

4/25: 1:00 pm- 2:00 pm: Official Reconition Ceremony for the Cornell Men's Big Red Basketball team and the Ithaca High School J.V. Boy's Little Red. Downtown Ithaca and the entire City of Ithaca will celebrate the accomplishments of the Cornell University Men's Varsity and Ithaca High School Boys J.V. Basketball teams at 1:00 p.m. The Cornell hoopsters recently went to the NCAA tournament for the second year in a row, while the I.H.S team won the Southern Tier Athletic Conference Championship. A proclamation from Ithaca Mayor Carolyn Peterson will be presented and the Cornell team will also shoot hoops and play basketball skill games with children. A Basketball hoop will be set up in Bank Alley on the Commons and all kids are invited to participate. The Ceremony starts at 1:00 pm in the Bernie Milton Pavilion.

SABADO GIGANTE -
4/25: 11:00 am- 4:00 pm: Sabado Gigante on the Commons. A giant Saturday celebration for children in grades 1 - 10. Sabado Gigante is based on the popular TV. show, which can bee seen on the Univision Television Network. It includes games and activities for kids, performances by student organizations from Cornell University, Ithaca College and area schools. The event is geared around community service and providing fun, performances, and prizes for the children in the community. Sabado Gigante runs until 4:00 p.m. and serves as the anchor for many of the other activities taking place on the Commons that day. It's sponsored by Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity at Cornell University COMMUNITY SCHOOL OF MUSIC AND ARTS -

4/8-5/10: Archaeology by Rachel Axler: Four quirky twenty-somethings are thrown together by a suspicious earthquake, an experiment with a Möbius strip and the possibility of time travel in this world premiere comedy from Emmy Award- winning writer Rachel Axler. Axler was until recently the only woman writer on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich., USA (April 8, 2009). There has been much controversy about touching in various cultures. The debate started when US President Barack Obama extended his hand to England's Queen Elizabeth and was further fueled when the First Lady was photographed touching the Queen on the back.Throughout the world the act of touching has cultural meaning.

In Asia it is considered disrespectful to touch an older person on the head, back, or shoulders. Even if the intent is to show respect or to comfort the person the act of touching these areas conveys insult. Touching a business card in many oriental cultures, especially Japan, is the same as touching the individual. Great care should be given to the business card by grasping the card with both hands, admiring it, and then placing it in your pocket closest to your heart. Also remember it is extremely rude to write on the business card, fold it, or to place it in your back pocket.General TouchingIn the Middle East it is rude to not hold the hand of a friend of the same gender while walking down the street. However it is rude, and could violate local law, to publically hold hands with a friend of the opposite gender. Publically touching in France is normal. It is normal to touch while greeting someone, if you agree with them, or to make a point. The touching is not violent of considered an invasion of personal space as it is expected.

In a study done by Jourard (1966) in Paris recorded an average of 110 touches by friends or parents in cafes as compared to 2 touches at coffee shops in Miami. Interestingly observers found that touching in Miami was more aggressive 37 percent of the time. Italy and Greece had high rates of touching while Australia, New Zealand, and England were more aligned with the Miami touch rates. Additional studies in later years found similar results.Mediterranean cultures are also very touching. Handshakes are not as common as a hug and cheek kiss among people of the same gender. This cultural norm typically is retained by Mediterranean travelers or immigrants.Shaking HandsShaking hands has some cultural implications:In Russia and Poland shaking hands is okay provided it is not done in a doorway or over a threshold. It is considered to be unlucky for both people. Hand shaking should occur before one gets to the door or after they have already entered.

In Europe it is considered impolite to shake hands while wearing gloves. Even on the coldest days it is expected the other person is important enough for you to remove your gloves. Fashion gloves worn by women are an exception as these gloves can remain on the woman's hands – however only if the gloves are designed specifically to be worn indoors.In sub-Sahara Africa a handshake typically involves both hands. The right hands clasp while left hands are laid over the right hands during the shake.In most Western cultures, such as the United States it is rude for a man to shake extend his hand to a woman unless she first extends her hand. Although this cultural courtesy is dying it is still expected to be followed in the elite and those in the Builder Generation.Never attempt to shake the hand of a German man if he is with his wife unless you first shake her hand. It is disrespectful and belittling to the woman if you seek to first shake her husband's hand.
