Ithaca, NY (9/18/2012) Hangar Theatre presents its third annual fall CabarETC season, a series of cabaret shows featuring one-night-only performances by local favorite vocalists and musicians including Catherine Gale, Sally Ramírez and Doug Robinson, Erica Steinhagen, Margaret Wakeley, as well as last season's sold-out smash-hit duo Jeremy Webb and Nat Chandler. The series runs on select dates from September 29th - December 8th.
This year's CabarETC series kicks off on September 29th at 8pm with Swing with Me: Jazz and the Great American Songbook a one-night-only appearance by jazz vocalist Catherine Gale and special guests from Ithaca College's music department who will be performing favorite selections and lesser known gems from the Great American Songbook including the works of Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Alec Wilder, and more re-imagined in a jazz context.
On October 20th at 8pm Sally Ramírez and Doug Robinson will perform An Evening of Latin Jazz and World Music with percussionist Jorge Cuevas and violinist Eric Aceto. The lively performance will include original Latin jazz compositions and world music favorites with works by Violeta Parra, Baden Powell, Rosana, Tom Zé, Antônio Carlos Jobim, and more.
Imagine My Surprise features Erica Steinhagen on October 27th at 8pm with her musings on the great unexpected journey of life through the songs of Stephen Sondheim, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Carol King, and Tori Amos, and more.
Then on November 10th at 8pm, Margaret Wakeley performs Perfect Relationships and Other Romantic Fantasies, exploring ideas of romance from first love to what happens when reality meets happily ever after with select works by Stephen Sondheim, Cole Porter, Ann Hampton Callaway, and more.
After selling out the house last season, Jeremy Webb (Phantom of the Opera, Camelot, Into the Woods) and Nat Chandler (The Scarlet Pimpernel, Spamalot, Kiss Me Kate!) return to perform a Special Holiday Show on December 8 at 3pm and 8pm to help you get in the holiday spirit with a show inspired by their Broadway experiences, warm holiday memories, and being with those we love.
CabarETC tickets range from $18 to $20. Student and Senior Discounts: Student and Senior Tickets are just $18 with a valid student or senior ID. Student rush tickets are just $12 and can be purchased at the Hangar Theatre Box Office 15 minutes before show time. BIOGRAPHIES
CATHERINE GALE
Catherine Gale was raised in a family of Broadway musicians and has been singing since the age of three. She attended Oberlin College, and completed her Bachelor of Music degree at Manhattan School of Music. In 2008, she moved to Ithaca, NY where she is currently on the faculty of Ithaca College teaching jazz voice and directing the Jazz Vocal Ensemble. She has previously served on the faculty at New York University where she taught jazz voice for over 10 years. She has sung with many groups in Central New York, including the Ithaca Jazz Quartet, the Central New York Jazz Orchestra, and Walter White's "Small Medium @ Large." For more than 15 years, she performed as a freelance singer in and around New York City, singing with a variety of groups including The Warren Vache Quintet, The Peter Deutchen Orchestra, Manhattan Sound, The Bronx Arts Ensemble and The Swing Mavens. Though much of her work is as a featured singer, Ms. Gale has always been a fan of, and a performer in jazz vocal groups. She toured extensively with Swing Fever, and over the years has been a member of such groups as The Swing Syndicate, Lance Hayward Singers, New Voice of Hope, & Sharp Five.
SALLY RAMÍREZ
Born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, Sally has been inspired throughout the years by the work of Puerto Rican composer and lyricist, Rafael Hernandez. Sally has a classical singing background, and her music covers the range from opera to folk music to jazz. Sally's extreme versatility as a vocalist has led her to perform in American jazz venues throughout Los Angeles such as Ca' del Sol, Monteleone's, and the Monsoon Café, and with various musical groups from the Wolverines in Minneapolis to Art Decco in Los Angeles. Sally also sang every holiday season for seven years with Diane Burt's "The Caroling Company" in Los Angeles.
Sally is also an accomplished actress. Television credits include shows such as "The Young and The Restless", the PBS series "American Family", with James Edward Olmos, "Hang Time, Arrest & Trial", "Alright Already", and PAX TV's "It's a Miracle". Stage credits include off-off Broadway, the Guthrie Theater (Minneapolis) and the Goodman Theater (Chicago).
Sally currently resides in Ithaca, NY, where she can be seen singing regularly at Delilah's Dance Club with the celebrated gypsy swing band, "Djug Django." Sally partnered up in 2008 with guitarist Doug Robinson, and their duo "Sally and Doug" has inspired many audiences. Their CD "Crimson" has won much local praise and recognition. Sally also sings with her band "Arco Iris," which includes Doug Robinson and percussionist Jorge Cuevas; and she appears also as "Sally Ramirez and Her Friends" -- her friends have included wonderful local artists such as Neal Massa, Harry Aceto, and Alejandro Bernard Papchryssanthou, Bernie Upson, and others. Sally tours with Doug Robinson presenting their cultural awareness show for schools called "Songs From the Heart," and their "Concerts In Your Home" shows for people who want to host exciting and inspiring house concerts for their friends.
DOUG ROBINSON
Doug Robinson is a guitarist, bass player, singer and producer, who has had a lengthy career as a performer and studio musician with artists such as the Burns Sisters, Martin Simpson, ragtime guitarist Bob Brozman, and Latin bluesman Tino Gonzales. In 2003 he performed at Carnegie Hall with Johnny Russo. He also performs frequently with the Ithaca-based "Djug Django" gypsy-swing band, the Molly MacMillan Jazz Trio, and singer Sally Ramírez. ERICA STEINHAGEN
Erica is an actor and a singer who has worked extensively in Ithaca at the Hangar Theatre and KTC. Previous shows at the Hangar include Ever So Humble, Beauty and the Beast, Cats, My Fair Lady, and The Sound of Music. She was recently seen in The Drowsy Chaperone at the Human Race Theatre in Dayton, OH, and in Bed & Sofa at the KTC in Ithaca where she has been in more than a dozen productions and several world premieres. Her short film, Poker Face, has made the festival rounds and her web series Uncorked! can be viewed at fingerlakesuncorked.com. Erica is a graduate of Ithaca College. Erica has performed as a singer in various operas, solo recitals, and concert performances in Ithaca and New York City. Erica is a proud member of the Actors' Equity Association.
MARGARET WAKELEY
Based first in Atlanta, then Los Angeles, Seattle and now Ithaca, Margaret Wakeley has entertained audiences across the United States and in Europe, with smooth vocals on a unique blend of jazz standards and contemporary gems. Her performances have been described as pure and beautiful high-class nostalgia. She has released two CDs, Perfect Strangers and Quality Times, in addition to two vinyl albums of original songs. Margaret appeared on the Hangar Theatre stage in the cast of The Chalk Circle, and has worked over 30 years doing commercial and narration voice-overs. She is currently on the webteam of www.gratefulness.org.
JEREMY WEBB & NAT CHANDLER
Jeremy Webb and Nat Chandler met 15 years ago at The Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia when they were cast as Mordred and Lancelot (respectively) in the Lerner and Loewe classic Camelot. They appeared together in The Secret Garden (South Carolina Festival of Flowers) and Spamalot (Maine State Music Theatre and Fulton Theatre). They have both collaborated extensively with esteemed conductor Gerald Steichen, including performances of Stravinsky's L'Histoire du Soldat (Jeremy) and Broadway By Request (Nat) for The Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra, where Mr. Steichen is Music Director.
Nat Chandler appeared on Broadway in The Scarlet Pimpernel as Percy Blakeney. Other career highlights include recent performances as King Arthur in Spamalot, Fred/Petruchio in Kiss Me Kate! and Shaunard in La bohème for Tampa Opera. Mr. Chandler starred as Raoul in The Phantom of the Opera directed by Hal Prince and toured the United States opposite Sarah Brightman in The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber. Mr. Chandler has played the role of Lancelot opposite Robert Goulet's King Arthur in Camelot, Rapunzel's Prince in Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods, Lun Tha in The King and I with Yul Brynner and Billy in Carousel with Shirley Jones. Barrymore Award nominated his work in the roles of Phantom in the Yeston/Kopit Phantom! and Lancelot in Camelot, Nat received a Kevin Kline nomination for Miles Gloriosus in A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum. Also Goodpeed, Wolftrap, Naples Symphony, Sunshine Pops, Repertory Theatre of St Louis, Cincinnati Playhouse, Huntington, Chautauqua and The Metropolitan Opera. Jeremy Webb returns home to Ithaca and to the Hangar direct from the Actors' Fund Concert of Kander and Ebb's The Visit on Broadway where he appeared opposite Chita Rivera and John Cullum. Jeremy created the role of Francesco in Lincoln Center Theatre's The Glorious Ones (Original Cast Recording), won a Drama Desk Award for his New York debut Tabletop and has appeared Off-Broadway in The Baltimore Waltz (Signature), Reading Under The Influence, Photograph 51 (Ensemble Studio Theatre) and Summer '69. Workshops: Bill Finn's The Royal Family of Broadway, Dance of The Vampires, andCairo. Also Peter Flynn's production of Sleuth at Maltz Jupiter, Atticus Finch in Wendy Dann's To Kill A Mockingbird at Dallas Theatre Center, The Visit (Helen Hayes Nomination), The Laramie Project (Connecticut Critics' Circle Award) and Hannay in The Hangar's production of The 39 Steps for which he was nominated for a SALT award.
