APPLE HARVEST FESTIVAL October 4-6, 2013 more infomation at downtownithaca.com The 31st Anniversary of the Great Downtown Ithaca Apple Harvest Festival set to take place on Friday, October 4th: 12-6pm, Saturday, October 5th: 10am-6pm and Sunday, October 6th: 10am-6pm As street fairs go, this one is outstanding - full of family entertainment, games, rides, prizes and live performances on two stages. Apple Harvest Festival is a great introduction to the rich farm and artist community of Ithaca. First time visitors can witness a variety of wonderful local entertainment while also visiting the historical outdoor pedestrian shopping mall, The Ithaca Commons. The pedestrian mall is the epicenter of the festival and the gateway to a nostalgic journey to harvest season fun. The delicacies of the region are at every turn with over 100 vendors selling unique apple varieties, hot apple cider donuts, kettle corn, local farm fresh baked goods and a multitude of around the world specialties. Local farmers are on site selling everything from tasty apple beverages to local pumpkins and of course, apples, apples and more apples. Wineries and cideries have regional beverages available for tasting and purchase. Kids can visit with the goats and learn how fiber is made with Laughing Goat Fiber Farm. Over 50 different artists display their handmade arts and crafts in the Fall Craft Show including jewelry, ceramics, home decor, body care, specialty gifts, unique sculpture, clothing and so much more. New Attractions: The CSMA East End Entertainment Area is a new addition for 2013. This fun filled area, chock full of Amish baked goods, local harvest season produce, beer and wine tasting, and a main performance stage, is a new exploration into the local charm of downtown Ithaca. Strong local performers take the stage by day to bring us wonderful dance, song and unique street performances for the duration of the festival. In the evening on Saturday, October 5, entertainment such as The Alash Ensemble and masters of Tuvan throat singing can be found between 8pm - 11pm inside the CSMA as part of their 6th Annual Arts for All Marathon! The Aurora Street Fairway introduces a fun filled children's play area to The Apple Harvest Festival. This wonderful street fair, located on the 200 block of North Aurora Street, is a timeless journey down memory lane. Here you can get lost in the charm of waiting for a turn on the ferris wheel, tasting homemade ice cream, or watching street performers. Family fun may even result in a charity fund raising "pie in the face" for a local student group. 2013 Location The festival takes place in the heart of Downtown Ithaca. It starts on the 100 W. Block of State Street and continues through the Commons east toward Cornell University. The walking path of the festival takes you by the large mural project in the Commons of over 200 different art pieces by local organizations and artists. It also leads you by the historic State Theatre, Ithaca Commons, Restaurant Row, and the Community School of Music and Arts (CSMA). The festival will have an additional entertainment area added this year. It is on the east end of the Commons by the CSMA. Here you will find a variety of farm goods, children's entertainment and a new sound stage for performance. As the Commons undergoes a historic transformation, we are expanding the footprint of the festival. Immerse Yourself in Local Culture at Downtown Ithaca's First Friday Gallery Night Friday, October 4th from 5 to 8pm and later On Friday, October 4th from 5 to 8pm and later, Ithaca's First Friday Gallery Night offers an exciting lineup of shows and events. Taking place in and around downtown, Gallery Night is a haven for art lovers and culture seekers, with an eclectic mix of artwork, such as Collegetown Bagels (203 N. Aurora St.) who will host an exhibition of works by Jeff McCall. McCall's painting is about the love of painting and painting paintings that love to paint themselves. Using watercolors, oils, spray paint, pastels, wine, coffee, glitter, sand and whatever materials are at hand, the artist creates images that are inherently musical and mystical. Repetition creates rhythm, rhythm creates form and form creates an architecture for color tones to harmonize. Meanwhile, newcomer Lot 10 (106 S. Cayuga St.) joins Gallery Night with a collection of Works by Eder Muniz. Titled 'The Alma of Nature: A rare showing of new works by one of Brazil's most prolific street artists,' the artist will be on hand to discuss his work and a specialty Brazilian inspired cocktail will be served during the reception. Sarah's Patisserie also joins the lineup with 'It's A Wonderful World ~ photographs by Sheryl Sinkow.' On display at Sarah's Patisserie in the Hilton Hotel on Seneca Street will be a sample of photographs taken over the past decade from Sheryl's travels. Her challenge is to make photographs that convey a sense of movement within the stillness of the medium and to express and share a sense of awe by the world around us. The Ink Shop (330 E. State/MLK St.) will host 'The Waning October Moon: Installation by Debra Fisher.' The show is an installation composed of intaglio prints mounted on wood, drawings, found objects, etched copper plates, and fabric, creating an environmental experience for the audience. In October of 2006, Fisher spent four months in the hospital. This installation of books and prints resulted from the life changing events she experienced during that time. Each piece represents a memory, person, place or event, which are interrelated, made precious through its execution. Fisher considers this series a work in progress, changing and evolving with each installation. She aims to convey a history of events, along with a universal timelessness that is presented with an element of familiarity. Throat Singers from Tuva Return to Ithaca for fundraising concert at CSMA October 5th at 8:00 pm at the Community School of Music and Arts Alash Ensemble will perform a concert as part of Arts for All Marathon on Saturday, October 5th at 8:00 pm at Community School of Music and Art at 330 Martin Luther King Jr./ State Street, Ithaca, NY. A portion of proceeds from ticket sales will benefit CSMA. From ALASHENSEMBLE.COM: Alash are masters of Tuvan throat singing, a remarkable technique for singing multiple pitches at the same time. Masters of traditional Tuvan instruments as well as the art of throat singing, Alash are deeply committed to traditional Tuvan music and culture. At the same time, they are fans of western music. Believing that traditional music must constantly evolve, the musicians subtly infuse their songs with western elements, creating their own unique style that is fresh and new, yet true to their Tuvan musical heritage. What does throat singing sound like? "Imagine a human bagpipe-a person who could sing sustained low note while humming an eerie, whistle-like melody. For good measure, toss in a thrumming rhythm similar to that of a jaw harp, but produced vocally-by the same person, at the same time." -Newsweek (March 17, 2006) Where is Tuva? Tuva (sometimes spelled Tyva) sits at the southern edge of Siberia, with Mongolia to its south. Over the centuries, Tuva has been part of Chinese and Mongolian empires, and shares many cultural ties with Mongolia. In 1944 it became part of the USSR, and until the late physicist Richard Feynman drew attention to it, was largely unknown to westerners. Tuva is now a member of the Russian Federation. Ithaca Downtown Business Women The October luncheon of the Ithaca Downtown Business Women group will be held on Thursday, October 3, 2013 from 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at the Holiday Inn, downtown Ithaca. Guest speaker will be Jean McPheeters, the Executive Director of the Tompkins Chamber of Commerce, who will speak about the upcoming changes in health care legislation. Buffet style lunch is $14 to members, with an annual membership of $20. New members are always welcome. Library to Host Lego Program Elementary-aged children can build more than a lifelong love of reading at Tompkins County Public Library this fall! Children in grades kindergarten through five are invited to attend "Legos in the Library," a weekly, free-build program, Saturdays, October 5 through December 14 from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Thaler/Howell Programming Room. "Legos in the Library" encourages children to use their imaginations or Lego books from the TCPL collection to create their own Lego art!
